Interests include culture, communication, and education with special attention to comparative and historical conditions. Polity and community theory, particularly as it applies to families, their immediate situations, and their positions in a global humanity as the joint production of all involved.

Biography

Professor Varenne is on the faculty of the Programs in Anthropology at Teachers College, Columbia University. He has conducted research and published on life in a small Michigan town, a New Jersey high school, a suburb of Dublin, a family in Manhattan. He is interested in culture theory as it can be developed by focusing on the transformative possibilities of everyday education in families, communities, work places and other setting not generally know as educative.
