Volker attended the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hanover and studied theology at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster from 1988 to 1993.
In 1993 he took his first theological examination here; 1996 he received his doctorate on Basilius von Cäsarea, the important saint of the Eastern Church; and
in 1998 he habilitated with the writing Die Entstehung der Gnadenlehre Augustins.
He completed his vicariate from 1998 to 2000 in the St.-Marten-Gemeinde in Osnabrück and at the St. Michael preacher's seminary in Hildesheim.
Since 2004, Theological Faculty of the University of Tübingen. Here he also represents Christian archaeology, among other things.
In April 2005, he was entrusted with the office of Ephorus of the Protestant Faculty Tübingen, in which he succeeded the theologian Eberhard Jüngel.
